Knowing the voice of the Spirit of God

Knowing the voice of the Spirit of God

There are many voices in the world. And if you and I are honest we all hear voices. There is the voice of conscience. There is the voice of desire. There’s the voice of reason. There’s the voice of culture. There’s the voice of obligation. There’s the liberating voice of freedom. There’s the imprisoning voice of fear. There is the voice of faith. There’s the voice of doubt. There is your voice, other people’s voice, Satan’s voice, and God’s voice. All these voices we hear and we must discern. No wonder God has given us the spirit of discernment.

What voice are you listening to? We must be led by the voice of the spirit of God.
As Christians it is imperative that we can distinguish the difference in the voices we hear, and that we are led only by the voice of the Lord.

Each voice tries to pull us in a direction. If you’re not careful following the direction of other voices can pull you way off track. These voices come in the form of thought. We must take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ

The book of Leviticus in the Old Testament proclaimed many laws and ordinances to follow. These were given specifically to the priests and workers in the church of the Lord. God gave very detailed instruction to the church leaders who would ultimately lead, by example, the rest of his people. The reason for this I believe can be summed up in this verse.

Leviticus 10:10
and so as to make a distinction between the holy and the profane, and between the unclean and the clean.

God has always wanted his people to know the difference between what is holy and pure and what is profane common and wicked. In the time of the Old Testament the Spirit of God was not dwelling in mankind. The Spirit of God would come on certain individuals for a certain season. These anointed individuals who would declare the word of the Lord to his people concerning the situations at hand. God’s people would then be expected to obey the Voice of God delivered through utterances and written words from prophets and Priest and the reading of The Commandments. Their obedience to these words would either bring a blessing upon their life and all that pertains to them or their disobedience would bring a curse upon them.

Today, all that believe on Jesus Christ are born again. The Spirit of the Lord dwells in every believer. Therefore, we no longer need to inquire a word from a prophet in order to hear from God. We simply approach God ourselves in prayer and in the study of the Scriptures. God is speaking clearly his desires and his will for you, but are you listening? Or what’s more are you obeying?

Just as clearly as God is speaking, so also is a corrupt culture speaking and sinful desire is speaking. There are so many opportunities to be led away from God and his purposes. We must be able to make a distinction between what is right and what is wrong what is holy and what is ordinary. What is pure and what is perverse.

How does God speak?
We must know be fully persuaded and confident that we are hearing and following the voice of the spirit.

When you take the time to pray and practice listening to God, you will better know his voice.

1. He speaks through the written word of God found in the Bible.
2. He speaks through the anointed word declared from the mouth of his people.
3. He speaks through the small impressions of the heart.
4. He speaks in dreams and visions.

Don’t be moved by natural events
Do not be directed by the natural events and happenings around you. Do not be moved by what you see, hear, or feel. Be moved only by the directive given through the word of God whether written or spoken.

1 Kings 19:11-13 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

The wind the earthquake in the fire were all natural events to declare the Lord’s presence. But Elijah was not led by the event but rather by the voice that he listen to after the event. The direction of the Lord was in the spoken word in the still small voice.

The council of the word

Proverbs 12:15 “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.”
A foolish person only relies on his own natural judgment in senses.

A person who relies on and lives by knowledge gained by sight is visual – seeing is believing

A person who relies on and lives by their natural senses is sensual. – how do I feel about this?

A person who relies on and lives by their spirit man is spiritual- what is my spirit saying?

Proverbs 12:5 The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit.

When you are in right standing with God you are righteous the thoughts of a righteous man is right.
